Maltese citizenship also affords you and your family the right to live, work and study in any EU country, as well as Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Moreover, Malta allows its citizens to have multiple citizenships, and hence one need not renounce any current citizenship upon obtaining Maltese citizenship.
From a business perspective, Maltese citizenship opens the doors to setting up shop and operating a business or investing locally, and to use Malta as a platform to expand one’s investments worldwide. Malta’s Citizenship by Merit
The Granting of Citizenship by Naturalisation on the Basis of Merit Regulations (Legal Notice 159 of 2025), issued under Article 10(9) of the Maltese Citizenship Act (Cap. 188), establishes Malta’s current framework for citizenship by naturalisation. This framework replaces the former Citizenship Programme, which the European Court of Justice declared incompatible with EU law in April 2025. Under the new system, Malta now grants citizenship exclusively on the basis of exceptional merit and contributions of national or global significance.
